Fortresses of the mind
We are engaged in “spiritual warfare,” fighting against forces of evil, from the “world, the flesh and the devil.” The battlefield of that warfare is often in our own mind and feelings.
II Corinthians 10:4-5
“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Notice the words “strongholds” (fortresses) and “thoughts.” The fortresses are made up of thoughts—think of it like a small castle in your mind.
Housing Our Thoughts
The source of good and evil is in the spirit; thoughts and emotions are in the soul realm. However, there is a third level, and that is the brain. The brain is in the physical realm. Brain cells are the organs in the body which contain the thoughts of the mind.
As I write this, I see words appearing on a computer screen. For those letters to appear, they must be stored up somewhere on a silicon chip, either in my computer or in the cloud of storage bank computers.
So it is with our thoughts. Words and mind pictures must have a bodily unit which “house” them. The units of the brain that embody those thought streams are called “synapses.” Synapses are a matrix of brain cells that contain our thoughts, much the way a computer holds information in storage.
These grouping of brain cells containing words and pictures are like a fortress or a stronghold. Whatever we do or say creates physical storage banks in our brain cells. These may be good or bad, but they are there. When we want to change our behavior, it’s like we are tearing down the synapses, and reprogramming those brain cells with correct information.
Everything we think, say or do forms a block of cells in our brain – a “brick” in the wall. Each synapsis contains an electro-magnetic charge. This is the spiritual power of good and evil resident in bodily form.
We can’t just have nice intentions floating around. We have to focus our words, thoughts and actions to change the physical composition of these mind fortresses. We wage war against these evil blocks of brain cells.
We fight that war by spiritual weapons. Our weapons are correct, Spirit-led words, thoughts and actions. We submit to the will of God; meditate on Scriptures; speak the Truth (out loud); and act in obedience to Yeshua.
The point is that spiritual warfare is REAL. The strongholds of the mind are much more REAL than we ever realized. Therefore, we must change our words, thoughts and actions in a more REAL way than we ever realized.
We keep speaking and acting in love and righteousness until the physical composition of the cells in our brain are rearranged to that of love and righteousness. We keep going until every thought is correctly aligned to the obedience and purity of Yeshua.

Jericho, Rahab, and the rope of hope
We passed the sign that forbade us from entering. We were on a bus to Jericho, which is under Palestinian control after the Oslo Accords, and Israelis are not free to go there without special permission. But we had special permission.
Situated in the lowest place on earth, next to the Dead Sea, Jericho is famous for walls that came tumbling down, and a certain prostitute called Rahab. Rahab, as you might know, ended up becoming a Very Important Person.
You can still see the remains of the city walls today, and evidence of houses that literally were built into the walls, just as the Bible describes. Jericho is the oldest city in the world, and it’s remarkable to see these Bronze Age ruins with your very eyes. It is a great privilege to be able to go on trips to see the Biblical sites like this, but it is also a huge blessing to be able to read the original language that the Bible was written in.
Just as seeing the ancient stones in real life makes the stories come alive, so seeing the choice of Hebrew words brings out priceless gems invisible in other languages.
I want to talk to you about Rahab and her rope.
The men said to her: “Our life for yours, if you don’t report this business of ours. Then it will be when Adonai gives us the land that we will deal kindly and loyally with you.”
So she lowered them down by a rope through the window—for her house was in the wall; she was living in the wall. (Joshua 2:14-15)
Joshua had sent two spies to check out the land, especially the city of Jericho. The King of Jericho was aware that they had gone through Rahab’s house, and told Rahab to hand them over to him. Our tour guide told us that some houses in the walls would have been almost like gateways to a city, through which people pass through and gossip gets known. But Rahab feared the Lord and covered for them. She let them out the window with a rope.
Here’s the thing about that rope in verse 15. In Hebrew, it’s the word “chevel” (חבל).
Chevel in Hebrew, even till today, means a rope or cord, but in the Bible it also pertains to territory because you can mark out territory with lines and cords. It can mean measured portion, lot, part or region, but it can also mean pain, sorrow or travail. We can be bound up with “chevelim”, with sorrows and pains – its a word that crops up in the book of Job a number of times. It can also refer to a noose or a snare, and can even be translated as destruction. It has connotations of birth pangs, and in the sister Semitic language, Arabic, the link between the umbilical cord and this same linguistic root for travail is clear.
So Rahab lets them down on this rope, this chevel.
Then she said to them: “Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers meet you, and hide yourselves there for three days, until the pursuers return. Afterward, you may go your way.”
Three days you say? That sounds like a typological bell ringing in my ear.
Then the men said to her: “We will be released from this oath that you have made us swear, unless when we come into the land, you tie this line of scarlet thread in the window through which you lowered us down.”
Now here in verse 18, after the three days, she is to let down that same rope to let them back up again.
But this time, the Hebrew word is different. And it’s scarlet now too.
It is not a rope (chevel חבל) anymore. It is a cord (tikva תקוה).
Here is what the Hebrew word “tikva” means :
- hope, expectation
- ground of hope,
- things hoped for,
See if any of the following paragraph sets off any echoes in your head:
“Gather to yourself in the house your father, your mother, your brothers and all your father’s household— whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head and we will be innocent, but whoever is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head if any hand is laid on him. But if you divulge this business of ours, then we will be released from your oath you have made us swear.”
So she said: “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away. After they had gone, she tied the scarlet cord to the window. Then they departed and came to the hill country. They stayed there for three days until the pursuers returned.
It’s rather reminiscent of the blood on the door frames exercise the Israelites had just had to do to escape death as the Lord passed over the houses. The scarlet color of the cord is symbolic of the lamb’s blood that caused death to pass-over the Israelites, and the family all had to be inside to be safe. If they failed to obey the instructions, then they would die along with everyone else. This, of course, also applies to the blood of the Lamb of God, Yeshua the Messiah. If we fail to accept his salvation (offered to us at the cost of his own life) we will perish.
First there was a chevel: marked out, bound-up pain and destruction, then after three days, a life-line of hope, tikva. Not unlike the Grand Story of Salvation that the Passover was pointing to: the death and resurrection of the Messiah.
The red cord of hope and salvation
Then the two men returned, came down from the hill country, crossed over and came to Joshua son of Nun. They reported to him all that had befallen them. “Surely Adonai has given all the land into our hands,” they said to Joshua.
And indeed, the Lord did give Jericho into their hands. The spies’ safe passage was assured by Rahab, and Rahab’s family were saved due to her fear of God and willingness to do what they told her to do to be saved. The walls came tumbling down in a manner that is archaeologically observable today, and God got the victory.
Rahab went on to marry one of the tribe – Salmon from the tribe of Judah – and they had a son called Boaz. Boaz, as you may know, went on to marry a woman from another of Israel’s enemies, Moab. Boaz and Ruth the Moabite gave birth to Jesse, father of King David, ancestor of the Messiah.
The message of Jericho is this:
There is hope of salvation for all who wish to be rescued from destruction, and an invitation is extended to join God’s people.
After we finished our tour of the ancient walls and ruins, I saw a board explaining in more detail what we had seen. The last sentence read,
“The city was destroyed towards 1550 BC, a blow from which it never recovered.”
Follow Rahab’s example, and choose salvation! Judgement and destruction will surely come, but the invitation is extended to all: Come under the protection of the God of Israel made available through Yeshua, and he will give you a place among his people. Even more than giving Rahab her life, God bestowed her with honor and put this Canaanite lady-of-the-night onto the VIP list of the Messiah’s genealogy. She has been recorded in history for all time, and over 3000 years later, we are still talking about Rahab and her faith. Hers is a testimony of the extreme goodness of God towards those who fear him and call on him for salvation.
As our God planned and purposed it, this Jericho story speaks to the wider story of the universe: chevel becomes tikva: after three days travail transforms into the hope of salvation. Yeshua died on the cross and after three days rose again in victory so that we could be saved. Take hold of that red life-line of salvation!

What are you praying for when you pray for Israel?
This last Friday, approximately 250,000 people turned out for the “Gay Pride” parade in Tel Aviv, capping a week of events in that city “celebrating” the city’s large number of homosexual residents. This was the first of the “Pride” parades planned to be held in Israeli cities this summer, to be capped by a parade in Jerusalem in August.
The first “Pride Parade” was held in Tel Aviv in 1999 and was a fairly small-scale event, attracting around 10,000 participants. Over the years it has grown larger every year and in the last five years several cities in Israel which never had such events have added them to their civic calendar. This didn’t happen by itself, the Israeli government, particularly the Ministry of Tourism, has granted tens of millions of shekels of taxpayer money to the organizers of these events in order to attract gay tourists from around the world to come to Israel. This has been the policy of every government for the last two decades, despite the presence of Ultra-Orthodox factions in almost all of these governing coalitions.
Beyond that, topics related to homosexuality and transgenderism, etc. are taught to Israeli school children starting in grade school and in most Israeli cities aside from Jerusalem, large billboards featuring scantily clad women (sometimes in suggestive poses with scantily clad men and/or other women) are posted outside malls, on the sides of large buildings and in many other public spaces in order to attract the attention of shoppers. Children also see these billboards of course, but no one seems to care about that.
The IDF grants two free abortions to female soldiers during their 2 years of mandatory military service and the number of abortions performed annually in Israel is estimated to range between 35-40,000.
According to estimates by social welfare groups, the police and education officials, nearly half of Israeli teenagers smoke tobacco cigarettes on a daily basis and a much larger percentage consume alcohol, marijuana and other “recreational” drugs on a weekly basis if not more often.
The parents of these kids usually know their children are sexually promiscuous, using drugs, etc. and they shrug it off as “rites of passage” that “all children go through these days” or they feel bad about it but also don’t know what they can do about it and some just don’t care, having done the same thing when they were teenagers and not seeing anything wrong with it.
Now, why am I telling you all this?
All of these issues (and many more that I could mention if I wasn’t trying to keep my blog short enough for people to actually read it) have grown in seriousness and intensity in this country to the tragic and outrageous proportions they have while at the same time, Christian engagement with this country at all levels has also increased by leaps and bounds. There have NEVER been better relations between Israel’s government and civil society and the world’s Evangelical Christian communities than there is today.
And yet, the social and spiritual climate in this country keeps getting darker and darker.
So that brings me to the question from the title of this blog.
When you pray for Israel, what are you praying for?
Are you praying for the protection of Israeli soldiers? Are you praying for “wisdom for Israeli politicians” so they won’t make any decisions you don’t think God would want them to make?
That’s all fine and good. But can I ask you to spare a few moments to also pray into some of these other issues I’ve mentioned here?
Brothers and sisters, IDF soldiers need protection. Israeli politicians need wisdom. Many communities need bomb shelters, many hospitals, schools, fire stations, etc. need help with all kinds of things and farmers in the West Bank need help picking their grapes. Praying for and giving support to all of these things can be good and helpful.
But what Israelis need more than any of that other stuff is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All those other things will, at best, treat symptoms on the margins of the real problem.
So what, you may ask, is the real problem?
The real problem Israel has is the same problem every other country in the world has, and it’s not coming from outside, it’s coming from inside. It’s a problem that Jewish people, just like every other kind of people, are born with. It’s called sin, and it only has one solution.
My hope, for everyone who reads this, is that they’ll find a way to become part of the solution, or at least manage to avoid being part of the problem. May God give us all the wisdom and direction we need to accomplish this.

But there are giants in the land!
When God spoke to Moses and called him to be the deliverer of His people Israel out of their bondage and slavery in Egypt, He said to Him, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.”- Exodus 3:12. God did deliver His people out of Egypt through Moses and they did come to meet with the Lord at Mount Sinai as He promised.
There at the mountain, God wanted to reveal Himself to His people and to make Himself known to them that they might hear His voice for themselves and receive His good instructions. But their response was fear and they said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen, but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”-Exodus 20:19.
God’s intention has always been to have a personal relationship with His people. We see this in the garden of Eden when Adam walked with God. We see this in the sending of God’s Son Yeshua whose death tore the veil in the temple so that all could come into God’s presence. We see this in the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:34 when God says the days are coming when all will know Him for themselves.
But what is it that hinders us from knowing God and receiving the good things He has for us? Fear. When the people heard God’s voice on the mountain, they were afraid and said to Moses, “you speak to us, but don’t let God speak to us or we might die!” God heard these words and He gave them what they asked for. Moses mediated between God and the people all throughout their journey through the desert.
Later on, when it was time for the children of Israel to inherit the good Land that God wanted to give them to possess as their own, spies were sent out to investigate what it was they would face. When the men came back, most of them gave a negative report and invoked fear into the hearts of the people. Their focus was not on the promise of God, but on the giants the people would need to overcome. Because the people chose fear instead of faith in God, once again, He saw their choice and instead of taking the Land He wanted to give them, they spent the next forty years in the wilderness.
Time and time again, it was fear that kept God’s people from intimacy with God and receiving the good things He had in store for them. Are you afraid to hear God’s answer to something you are seeking Him about? Are you afraid to do something that He is calling you to do? Perhaps you have lost faith that the challenges or giants that you are facing are part of the outworking of God’s plan for your life. In this day, God sets before us a choice to make. We can either choose fear and miss out on all that God has for us, or, we can choose faith and walk out His calling and into His promises.
Remember, God’s intention is not to bring you and I out of Egypt, up the mountain, or into the promised Land to harm us. His intention is for us to know Him, worship Him and to make Him known in the earth.

The prince of the air waves
Had you picked up any number of newspapers in May you would have seen headlines such as “BLOODBATH: Scores dead, thousands wounded as Israel fires on Palestinians protesting over Trump’s new embassy” , “Mother’s agony as baby dies in Gaza gas horror” . You would have read, for example, that “The South African government condemns in the strongest terms possible the latest act of violent aggression carried out by Israeli armed forces along the Gaza border…Given the indiscriminate and grave manner of the latest Israeli attack, the South African government has taken a decision to recall [its embassador] with immediate effect until further notice” , You would have learned of the call by the UN secretary general for an “independent investigation” of the IDF for disproportionate casualties against peaceful civilians demonstrating for the right of Palestinians to return to their villages .
You would not have known, unless you went to sources other than the mass Media that “The Great March of Return”, billed as a peaceful protest, was anything but. Gazan terrorists, under the leadership of Hamas, planned, under cover of 10s of thousands of demonstrators, and bellowing smoke from burning tires, to storm the border fence with Israel, breach it and carry out massacres and abductions in nearby Israeli villages . They had firearms, knives and machetes, and had been given maps of neighboring villages. The protestors, who had been picked up and bused to the site, were promised money for participating, and more if wounded . They were incited by statements, like Yahya Sinwar’s, head of the Hamas military wing, “We will tear down the border and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies… and eat the livers of Israelis .” When Israeli snipers were able to contain the rioters from breaking into Israel, they added to their rocks and Molotov cocktails incendiary kites which they launched over the fence to burn thousands of dunams of forest and farm land, causing millions of shekels of damage . The only reason we now know that 52 of the 62 “demonstrators” killed on May 14 were terrorists is because Hamas official Salah Bardawil admitted so to answer the Gazans who were furious at being pushed towards the fence by Hamas while the terrorists stayed behind . The papers didn’t retract their “baby dies in Gaza gas horror”, although it was later admitted by medical authorities that the baby was born with a life-threatening heart condition .
You can expect that Israel will continue to be demonized and slandered by the mass Media, by world leaders and institutions because of the spiritual powers that deceive and guide them. That’s what scripture teaches us. Ephesians 6:12 explains “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” These evil spirits, under the leadership of Satan, exercise influence over the thoughts and attitudes of people without even their awareness. “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers” (2 Cor. 4: 4). Eph. 2:2 elaborates further, “in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience”. “This world” is the world system: governments, media, educational and cultural institutions, philosophical and religious systems, etc. The “god of this world” is Satan. The “children of disobedience” is every member of the human race who has not been born of the Spirit of G-d, and walking in His truth.
Satan was once Lucifer, the most beautiful of G-d’s created order, until he became proud of his own beauty, wanted to be worshipped, and consequently deceived 1/3 of the heavenly host into rebelling against the Lord. Jesus tells us what Satan is like and what he wants. “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies”. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (Jn 8:44, 10:10); “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18) Isaiah tells us why Satan fell from heaven: “ You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’. (Isaiah 14:12-14). G-d replies to Satan’s aspirations, “therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub”.(Ezek 28:16). There is an ongoing war between G-d and Satan, and man has been drawn into it. Satan hates G-d with a fierce passion, and wants to destroy the human race, whom G-d created in love, for His good purposes. G-d created the Jewish people to be a vehicle of blessing to the nations, and Satan, the Father of Lies, is at work to thwart G-d’s purposes, and rally the nations against them. That is why the whole world will lay siege against Israel according to Zechariah 12, and even after a thousand years of peace and prosperity, once Satan is released from the bottomless pit he deceives the nations into surrounding and attacking the Holy city of Jerusalem. He is very persuasive.
A glance at the history of the Jewish people will demonstrate how zealously Satan manufactures the most outlandish lies and calumnies against them. This is not to say that Jewish people do no wrong, but that there is a spiritual conspiracy at work to demonize them and inculcate people with ferocious, irrational hatred towards them. Here are some examples from the Bible. Pharaoh says of the Children of Israel, who were such a blessing to Egypt “if war breaks out, they [will] join our enemies and fight against us.” (Exod. 1:10); although Israel was careful to conquer only the land of Canaan, the Moabites warned ““This horde will now lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” (Num. 22:4); Israel conquered none of the Land of Ammon, yet their king made war against Israel, claiming “Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land” (Judges 11:13); Although Cyrus, king of Persia, ordered the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, the enemies of Israel wrote letters of complaint to Persia, and also slandered Nehemiah, saying “It is reported among the nations … that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king.” (Neh. 6:6); because Mordechai would not bow to Haman he plotted to annihilate all of the Jews, and approached the King with these words – “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom…they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not to the king’s profit to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed” (Es. 3:8); during Yeshua’s ministry He was accused of being “a winebibber and friend of publicans”, a “blasphemer”, and “it is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” (Matt. 12:24)’
We know that the early believers in Yeshua were accused of atheism and cannibalism by the Romans , and that the Emperor Nero viciously persecuted them under the false charge of burning Rome. Greco-Roman society often harbored anti-Semitic views, referencing their “base origin, misanthropy, superstition, impiety and sacrilege, and rebellious conspiracy nature ”. The ancient Greeks believed that the Jews annually sacrificed a Greek, or other foreigner, to their G-d, and “tasted his flesh ”. The Church itself was used by Satan to slander the Jews. John Chrysostom, one of the early Church fathers, wrote “The synagogue is not only a whorehouse and a theatre; it is also a den of thieves and a haunt of wild animals… if a person call it a brothel today, or a criminal’s hangout, or a resort of demons, or a Citadel of the Devil…he would speak more kindly than the place deserves .”
Jews were later charged by the Church of sacrificing Christian children to use their blood in preparing the Passover Matzoh (Blood Libel), stabbing or mistreating the transubstantiated body of Jesus used in the Eucharist service (Host Desecration ), poisoning wells to spread the Black Plague, and deicide. Even the great reformer, Martin Luther, turned on the Jews calling them ‘these poisonous envenomed worms’ and advocated burning their schools and synagogues as well as confiscating their property and money .
In modern times many patently absurd characterizations and slanders were directed against them from secular sources. After the 1905 Revolution in Russia the Czarist secret police began circulating “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion”. This booklet, purported to be the minutes of a secret international meeting of Jewish leaders to take over the world, was found to be a forgery, but never-the-less was used by the Czarists as well as the Nazis to justify murdering Jews .They have been accused of working for Germany to defeat France, and of also causing the defeat of Germany. They have been stigmatized in Capitalist societies as being Bolsheviks and Communists, while accused by Communists of being Capitalists, and accused by others of controlling the world banking system. Antisemitism in the Arab world has both denied that there was a holocaust, and at the same time characterized the Jewish state as being Nazis [19,20]. They have appropriated the history of the Jewish people for themselves. The holocaust is replaced by the Nakba, the genocide carried out by the Nazis has been repackaged as directed against the Palestinians, the Jewish Right of Return to Israel has become the Palestinian Right of Return, the racism perpetrated against the Jews throughout history has been changed to Israel as an apartheid state. On June 8 they are reported to be preparing to march to the border “wearing clothing made to resemble uniforms worn by prisoners in concentration camps in the Holocaust” , and attempt to cross over, as if breaking out of the death camps.
Satan has deceived the whole world in his efforts to isolate and annihilate G-d’s covenant people. Only when He is consigned to Hell will the people see Satan and his lies for what they really are. In Isa. 14:12-16 “They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof…?”. As Paul urges in Romans 12:2 ,” be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”. We must not rely on the Media and public opinion for our world view, but rather renew our minds by seeing through the lens of Holy Scripture, which will dispel the lies of the enemy.
